What is Co-vid -19?

Covid 19

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome. It was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has since spread globally, resulting in an on-going pandemic.

Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of smell and taste. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The time from exposure to onset of symptoms is typically around five days but may range from two to fourteen days.

The virus is primarily spread between people during close contact, most often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing, and talking. The droplets usually fall to the ground or onto surfaces rather than travelling through air over long distances. Less commonly, people may become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face. It is most contagious during the first three days after the onset of symptoms, although spread is possible before symptoms appear, and from people who do not show symptoms. The standard method of diagnosis is by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) from a nasopharyngeal swab. Chest CT imaging may also be helpful for diagnosis in individuals where there is a high suspicion of infection based on symptoms and risk factors; however, guidelines do not recommend using CT imaging for routine screening.

Recommended measures to prevent infection include frequent hand washing, maintaining physical distance from others (especially from those with symptoms), quarantine (especially for those with symptoms), covering coughs, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face. In addition, the use of a face covering is recommended for those who suspect they have the virus and their caregivers. Recommendations for face covering use by the general public vary, with some authorities recommending for them.

Disinfection

Disinfectants are chemical agents designed to inactivate or destroy microorganisms on inert surfaces. Disinfection does not necessarily kill all microorganisms, especially resistant bacterial spores; it is less effective than sterilization, which is an extreme physical or chemical process that kills all types of life.[1] Disinfectants are generally distinguished from other antimicrobial agents such as antibiotics, which destroy microorganisms within the body, and antiseptics, which destroy microorganisms on living tissue. Disinfectants are also different from biocides — the latter are intended to destroy all forms of life, not just microorganisms. Disinfectants work by destroying the cell wall of microbes or interfering with their metabolism.

Sanitizers are substances that simultaneously clean and disinfect. Disinfectants kill more germs than sanitizers. Disinfectants are frequently used in hospitals, dental surgeries, kitchens, and bathrooms to kill infectious organisms.

Purposes of Disinfection

Disinfection refers to the application of a chemical agent to destroy or inhibit the growth of microorganisms on the surface of an instrument or surgical device. These chemical agents are known as disinfectants.

Scope of work

We use disinfectants approved by EPA and any associated manufacturer's guidance for porous surfaces. Prior to entering the area, we shall done appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the specific disinfectants used. We may need to wear additional PPE such as safety glasses, non-fabric disposable gloves and disposable suits or gowns. Following the closure period, we shall open any available windows and doors to ensure adequate ventilation throughout the disinfection period. When disinfecting of the area is complete, we shall remove and dispose mask cover, gloves, gowns (suits) and other PPE being careful not to contaminate the wearer or office surfaces. All used PPE and cleaning materials shall be disposed of in a sealed plastic disposal bag.
